Today's bike ride took me around the "Chain of Lakes." It's a great ride on a weekday afternoon when it's not crowded with too many people also enjoying the beauty of these lakes in the middle of the city.
Today I completed three books of short stories and made progress on The Goldfinch. If anyone has read The Goldfinch, please let me know your thoughts. I understand why most people like it or hate it. I'm leaning towards liking it, but when his dad asked for his social security number, I knew what was going to happen. On the other hand, I didn't predict what happened next. If you've read this book, what would you rate it (fist to five)?
America Street: A Multicultural Anthology of Stories. I rated this 4 of 5 stars on Goodreads in 2004 and 2 out of 5 stars today. I think this says something about me growing as a person. Some of the stories are the old "classics" while the others are "meh". I realized any story I would use from this anthology, I could find the pdf online.
Leaving Home. I've had this book for years (over ten?) and use it infrequently. Today I read it and realized it has some good stories. It's probably as good as any multicultural anthology I've found. Perhaps I need to give it another chance.
Crazy Loco. This book has been siting on my shelf, so I finally gave it a read. Since 1/3 of my students are Hispanic, I thought this book would be good. It's good, and I might try to incorporate it next year. One of my Latina girls is constantly tardy to classes and in some kind of minor trouble. She's really bright. Today she was late for testing. At the end of class, I told her to stay after and explained she was going to read the book for me. "Since you drive me crazy and because you are really smart, you're going to read this book for me. I need you to tell me which stories you like and don't like," I explained. Although I expected some argument, she took the book and said she'd read it. We'll see what happens.
This may be a week of blogging about biking and reading since it seems that's all I'm doing. I love the time to read, but I can't wait for this week of testing to be finished.
