See

The Swan by Mary Oliver

Did you too see it, drifting, all night, on the black river?
Did you see it in the morning, rising into the silvery air--
An armful of white blossoms,
A perfect commotion of silk and linen as it leaned
into the bondage of its wings; a snowbank, a bank of lilies,
Biting the air with its black beak?
Did you hear it, fluting and whistling
A shrill dark music-- like the rain pelting the trees-- like a waterfall
Knifing down the black ledges?
And did you see it, finally just under the clouds--
A white cross streaming across the sky, it's feet
Like black leaves, its wings Like the stretching light of the river?
And did you feel it, in your heart, how it pertained to everything?
And have you too finally figured out what beauty is for?
And have you changed your life?

See.  It's interesting that the word vision was used prior to the word see.  Once a week, I show a picture and the kids write about it using Perceive.  I've blogged about this many times before because it's a great way to "see" something through different eyes.  Often when we look at a the picture, students see things that I didn't see.  Not only do they talk about what they see, they talk about connections.  I love the connections.  When I chose today's picture, I connected it with the song "I Can See for Miles" by The Who.  As I continued looking at the picture to see if it was representative of the word see, it reminded me of yesterday's picture and biking since I often ride by the train tracks.  It seems I see that spring, the time of lilies and white blossoms and rain pelting the trees, is actually on the way.

I give thanks for...
1) It's Friday!
2) Using last night's class to work on other things beside class
3) My credit score "rates higher than 99 percent of U. S. consumers."

Happy Sunday to you, MM.

I want to know more about this perceive program.

Do you have to go to a workshop or the materials available for anyone?

Please advise.

If you click on the link, it gives some explanation. It's really easy. I show a picture (photo, artwork, anything). The students divide their paper in four squares (2 x 2 table). The first box is basically a place to write everything they see. The box under (lower left) is a place to write what they think is happening in the picture and/or connections to the picture. The upper right box is a box about the mood of the picture (some work with mood ... colors in pic... not always facial expressions because not every picture has a person is needed), the lower left box is for questions. I never tell them anything about the picture until we're done. Then I reveal where the picture came from or any knowledge I have. We do it once a week for journals. They write. They discuss in groups of three. They group share with entire class. Oh, on that sight theres should be a link with an example next to an amazing chicken picture. Message me if you can't find it.

Sankalpa Day 5

Today I went back to the interweb to find out what I could post about that would relate to sankalpa .  "...Sankalpa has the potential to release tremendous power by clearly defining and focusing on a chosen goal."  My chosen goal since May has truly been on being physically active.  Since it's cold and miserable out, I've been being active inside instead of outside.  December 6th (or something like that) was the last time I ventured outside for physical activity.  I, however, have still been going to they gym and focusing on being physically fit (or at least burning enough calories to eat more food).  Yesterday I received an early morning text from a friend in God's Country .  President Obama was talking about "The President's Challenge" .  Today (I tried yesterday and decided to put it off until today... forget out it... let it happen... put it aside... clear my mind of it... all probably sankalpa) I formed a group.  The...

What if... The Delivery

Molly was excited to get a package from her friend who lives in Alaska.  When she opened the box, she was confused.  Although the shirt was actually soft and of good quality, she was upset by the guns in the flag.  When she googled Holster's, it was exactly what she thought... pro-gun.  She didn't know how to handle the situation, so she sent a picture stating she was confused. Her friend had obviously lost her mind.  During the conversation, she kept proclaiming that she hadn't sent a t-shirt.  When Molly explained it was her writing on the box, things became weird.  The friend was in a state of denial.  Molly even sent a text with a picture of the writing on the box. Molly's friend was adamant that she sent homemade condiments.  She wouldn't give up on her story even though it was clear Molly is in possession of an NRA type t-shirt.  After much deliberation, the two friends realized what had happened.  The original box, wit...

Missing You

Two Sundays ago I missed church because I was out of town. Last Sunday I missed church because I could not get to church due to the marathon (blocking my path... not my running). Dad and I tried to leave early, but we did not leave early enough. I joked with Dad about the fact that they would miss me at church. When I checked my e-mail this evening, I actually had an e-mail from my pastor saying I was missed. It was a short e-mail, but it was sweet and definitely a positive part of my day.
