Two days of the four day week are finished. It's been entertaining.
Surprisingly, students worked hard on Tuesday. I was expecting it to be crazy after the had 16 days without the structure of school. I, however, wasn't as behaved. Between first and second hours I realized the Keurig was not in the room across the hall. I marched back to class and explained the problem. Students would need to continue their quick write until I returned with coffee from the office downstairs. I was about to leave a student states, "I thought you were going to drink more water." Touche my friend, touche.
Today I found out one of my students from last year is going to participate in a TruArtSpeaks Poetry slam. She came in last hour while my students were writing and revising, and we looked at her poem. I gave some her some advice. I'm super excited hoping that last year's poetry slam in class had something to do with this choice. Yay engaged students!
I had another student today that did little work and has done little work all trimester. After class I told him I wanted to see him at lunch and at homework/soccer after school. Since I didn't trust that he would actually come in for lunch, I told the administrators to look for him in the lunch room. When he came up to my room for lunch, I quizzed him about the administration having to send him to my room. He was adamant that he came on his own. After lunch an administrator stopped him in the hall thinking he had skipped seeing me. The poor student had to explain to her that he really had gone straight to my classroom. We both apologized for not extending our trust. Plus, he is almost to where he needs to be in his writing.

A few weeks ago I told a kid to come see me at recess.
I asked him, "Do I need to come find you at recess or will you come directly here after your lunch?"
He answered with clarity, "You had better come fine me. This is the type of thing I never can remember."
