Year End Blog

2016 has come to an end.  Once again, I went back to blog posts (not as many this year) to summarize my year.  I realize this is a bit boring.  It's probably more for me than others.

January

It seems in January (2016) I learned that MLK Jr. was a Cubs fan.  Perhaps this was the knowledge needed for the Cubs to win the World Series in 2016... just saying.  January also brought Wing Young Huie to my classroom.  He's back again for several days, so yesterday we emailed making plans.

February

My blog doesn't really say much about February since I was doing the Lenten challenge.  It's full of pictures and poems matching the giving word.  My two favorites were snowshoeing and seeing Sherman Alexie.  He was hilarious!  I love him.

March

Oh no.  In March I talked about the word beloved for the Lenten challenge.  I hope this wasn't the same as blogging about MLK Jr liking the Cubs.  Maybe I contributed to the events of 2016.  The Cyclones also made it to the Sweet 16 in March.

April

April is always #30DaysofBiking.  Riding every day in April is typically a challenge because the weather is always extreme and crazy.  Speaking of Let's Get Crazy, April was also the month of Prince's death, and of course, I rode my bike to First Avenue on the day of his death.

May

May warmed up and brought more biking.  This year we only did 50 miles for the Fulton Gran Fondo, so we could bike to Paisley Park and back.  I also did Race for the Cure and Tutu on Wheels. All were great events.

June

June is the start of summer, and I can tell from my blog that life was good.  I participated in a 50+ mile ride of Milwaukee Beer Gardens (biking and beer drinking in the heat... what could go wrong?).  It was also time for the annual University of Okoboji Class (more biking and drinking).  I managed to get in a bit of kayaking with all of the biking.

July

July is RAGBRAI month which means a week of biking (and drinking???).   I also joined Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, Black Lives Matter, and the American Federation of Teachers to march for change in Minneapolis.  It's obvious that 2016 will bring more marches for change.

August

My dad decided to sell his house acreage in August, so I made on more trip to the farm.  It was sad, but August had some great events.  I volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity house which was fun, feel good experience.  Next year, I want to find more opportunities. It also brought Powderhorn 24.  I love this 24 hour biking relay (for us) event.

September

September is back to school month which is always bitter-sweet.  Today I'm babysitting Britt Britt which I also did in September.  I think she likes it her.  I like the Redneck Liberal and was able to see him at a comedy club in September.  A friend and I picketed with the nurses which as I mentioned I'll be doing more marches and events of solidarity in 2017.

October

Prince's Paisley park opened for tours in October, and I made one of the first tours.  October also brought the Mankato Rambler ride with pie!  Also, I went to God's Country to participate in the harvest (corn).  I do love fall (not as much as summer).

November

Looking back at November is crazy.  I'm going to try to post without mentioning the election (too late), but it will always be remembered.  I went to Atlanta for NCTE and listened to Ta-Nehisi Coates.  While I was in Atlanta, I also stopped by the Civil Rights Museum (such a great experience).   I also visited my college roommate in Dallas and helped with their Sports Xtravaganza for visually impaired youth.  Did I mention the Cubs won the World Series in November?  The Cubs won the World Series!!

December

My dad turned 75 in December, and we drove to Ames for an Iowa State basketball game.  My blog says that I didn't do much in December; I merely looked back at the year.  I guess this is OK.

Oh gosh, I'm so glad you did this. Maybe I'll get motivated to do it too because
your year seems kind of wonderful.

Happy New Year, MM!

Sankalpa Day 5

Today I went back to the interweb to find out what I could post about that would relate to sankalpa .  "...Sankalpa has the potential to release tremendous power by clearly defining and focusing on a chosen goal."  My chosen goal since May has truly been on being physically active.  Since it's cold and miserable out, I've been being active inside instead of outside.  December 6th (or something like that) was the last time I ventured outside for physical activity.  I, however, have still been going to they gym and focusing on being physically fit (or at least burning enough calories to eat more food).  Yesterday I received an early morning text from a friend in God's Country .  President Obama was talking about "The President's Challenge" .  Today (I tried yesterday and decided to put it off until today... forget out it... let it happen... put it aside... clear my mind of it... all probably sankalpa) I formed a group.  The...

What if... The Delivery

Molly was excited to get a package from her friend who lives in Alaska.  When she opened the box, she was confused.  Although the shirt was actually soft and of good quality, she was upset by the guns in the flag.  When she googled Holster's, it was exactly what she thought... pro-gun.  She didn't know how to handle the situation, so she sent a picture stating she was confused. Her friend had obviously lost her mind.  During the conversation, she kept proclaiming that she hadn't sent a t-shirt.  When Molly explained it was her writing on the box, things became weird.  The friend was in a state of denial.  Molly even sent a text with a picture of the writing on the box. Molly's friend was adamant that she sent homemade condiments.  She wouldn't give up on her story even though it was clear Molly is in possession of an NRA type t-shirt.  After much deliberation, the two friends realized what had happened.  The original box, wit...

Missing You

Two Sundays ago I missed church because I was out of town. Last Sunday I missed church because I could not get to church due to the marathon (blocking my path... not my running). Dad and I tried to leave early, but we did not leave early enough. I joked with Dad about the fact that they would miss me at church. When I checked my e-mail this evening, I actually had an e-mail from my pastor saying I was missed. It was a short e-mail, but it was sweet and definitely a positive part of my day.
