Lilies by Mary Oliver
I have been thinking
about living
like the lilies
that blow in the fields
They rise and fall
in the edge of the wind,
and have no shelter from the tongues of cattle,
and have no closets or cupboards,
and have no legs.
Still I would like be
as wonderful
as the old idea.
But if I were a lily
I think I would wait all day
for the green face
of the hummingbird to touch me.
What I mean is,
could I forget myself
even in those feathery fields
When Van Gogh
preached to the poor
of course he wanted to save someone--
most of all himself.
He wasn't a lily,
and wandering through the bright fields
only gave him more ideas
it would take his life to solve.
I think I will always be lonely
in this world, where the cattle
graze like a black and white river--
where the vanishing lilies
melt, without protest, on their tongues--
where the hummingbird, whenever there is a fuss,
just rises and floats away.
Shelter. I can't think about the word shelter without picturing the shivering dogs in the shelter kennels from the commercial. Although I can't remember the organization, I always have to turn from the television when it's on. My heart feels for the animals but not enough to send money to this organization. Do you know the commercial I'm thinking about? I think I take shelter for granted. As I work on refinancing my shelter, many go without shelter. It's important this shelter, but I think it's like the word refuge; we can find shelter in/with other humans. Now, it's time to leave my shelter and go to work...
"Nothing that has value, real value, has not cost. Not freedom, not food, not shelter, not healthcare." ~Dean Kamen
I am grateful for...
1) Bill Murray... he makes me laugh... always...
2) shelter... it seems weak, but I do realize I'm blessed to have a nice place
3) Mary Oliver... I actually googled Mary Oliver shelter to find today's poem. It seemed she'd have something to say about shelter.
