TAL: Kindness on RAGBRAI

For those that think Iowa is completely flat...
The people (thousands and thousands) of RAGBRAI really make it more than a bike ride.  Although I could tell story after story of the kindness on the ride, I only have three events for TAL.  As far as towns and locations, the week seems to have blurred together.

Act One:  Wednesday's ride brought riders hanging out at the nursing home.  The nursing home had signs welcoming RAGBRAI riders to come in for an indoor bathroom and a place to relax in the shade.  They also invited riders to stop and talk to the residents.  As we rode past, we witnessed riders sitting next to residents.  It was so sweet.  Later I wished that I had actually stopped and talked with the residents.  It's a great idea.  RAGBRAI is about more than riding; it's about talking to people and enjoying the stories of others.

Act Two:  One Thursday (?) I was struggling with my asthma.  It'd been fairly controlled all week, but I was struggling.  As I was struggling up and down some of the smaller hills, I was gasping for air.  Normally I cycled with a group of five to six, but at this point I was riding with one other member of the team.  Although I didn't really know him well, he kept riding with me and persuading me to stop and use my inhaler.  I kept saying one more hill then I'll stop.  My guess is I was super frustrating to ride with during this time, but he was extremely kind and patient (not bad for someone I'd know for three days).

Act Three:  On Wednesday I rode with a friend (M) and former colleague.  She's originally from Cedar Falls, and we had a great time riding and talking.  We stopped by the campsite to get my stuff to stay at her dad's house.  It was my first chance to wash my hair, and the shower was exactly what I needed.  Plus, I was able to take some of my dirty clothes to my car.  Thursday she took me back to the campsite, so I could ride with Team Wimpy.  During the ride M sent a message wondering if I needed the sleeping bag and sleeping pad that were in the back of the car.  We exchanged several messages back and forth as I tried to figure it out.  Basically, I must have accidentally grabbed someone else's bag on Wednesday as I put my stuff in her car.  A group of us were sitting around as we took a break.  M noticed a last name on the bag.  I asked if anyone knew a C on the team.  K, a friend I'd made while riding, said it was here last name.  She lives in CF and had stayed at her house, so she didn't know her stuff was missing.  It's hard to explain, but she was able to borrow items for the last two nights due to schedules and M took the stuff to K's house in CF.  Anyway, M and K both showed kindness and understanding.  Everything tends to work out when people are kind and helpful.

Sankalpa Day 5

Today I went back to the interweb to find out what I could post about that would relate to sankalpa .  "...Sankalpa has the potential to release tremendous power by clearly defining and focusing on a chosen goal."  My chosen goal since May has truly been on being physically active.  Since it's cold and miserable out, I've been being active inside instead of outside.  December 6th (or something like that) was the last time I ventured outside for physical activity.  I, however, have still been going to they gym and focusing on being physically fit (or at least burning enough calories to eat more food).  Yesterday I received an early morning text from a friend in God's Country .  President Obama was talking about "The President's Challenge" .  Today (I tried yesterday and decided to put it off until today... forget out it... let it happen... put it aside... clear my mind of it... all probably sankalpa) I formed a group.  The...

What if... The Delivery

Molly was excited to get a package from her friend who lives in Alaska.  When she opened the box, she was confused.  Although the shirt was actually soft and of good quality, she was upset by the guns in the flag.  When she googled Holster's, it was exactly what she thought... pro-gun.  She didn't know how to handle the situation, so she sent a picture stating she was confused. Her friend had obviously lost her mind.  During the conversation, she kept proclaiming that she hadn't sent a t-shirt.  When Molly explained it was her writing on the box, things became weird.  The friend was in a state of denial.  Molly even sent a text with a picture of the writing on the box. Molly's friend was adamant that she sent homemade condiments.  She wouldn't give up on her story even though it was clear Molly is in possession of an NRA type t-shirt.  After much deliberation, the two friends realized what had happened.  The original box, wit...

Missing You

Two Sundays ago I missed church because I was out of town. Last Sunday I missed church because I could not get to church due to the marathon (blocking my path... not my running). Dad and I tried to leave early, but we did not leave early enough. I joked with Dad about the fact that they would miss me at church. When I checked my e-mail this evening, I actually had an e-mail from my pastor saying I was missed. It was a short e-mail, but it was sweet and definitely a positive part of my day.
