Book Love

This year I've finished to books about reading.  Notice and Note (Beers and Probst) and Book Love (Kittle).  First, I would like to say that I wish I had read Notice and Note earlier in the year, like over the summer before the school year started.  It would have changed how I introduced a couple of novels at the beginning of the year.  Even though I didn't read it early enough to help with the reading of the novels in my class, I introduced "contrasts and contradictions" to my students recently as we were reading short stories, and I think it helped all readers.  It helped struggling readers tie the story elements together, and it gave all readers a chance to pause and think about the reading.  Yesterday I met with a group that discussed Book Love an wished some of them were reading Notice and Note.  Book Love is a wonderful book for teachers who are teaching reading or language arts. While Book Love reminds us of the importance of individual reading, Notice and Note gives us strategies.  Book Love, however,  has made me determined to find a book for CH.  On Thursday, we wrote in our journals about a picture of the Minneapolis Central Library (inside, the stacks).  When CH was called upon, he said it reminded him of going to a really big library where he still couldn't find a book he liked.  CH is a bright student who probably does a lot of "fake reading."  Last night as we talked about Book Love, I decided it was my goal to find at least one book that he likes this year.  When he came into class today, I asked him to sit at my desk and gave him a small sheet of paper.  "I want you to write down the five most important things in your life,"  I stated.  His list included family, friends, football, technology, and I can't remember the last one.  I circled football, and let him work on his journal.  As he was working, I called the media center and asked if there was an available copy of Gym Candy.  Later as we were working on our first drafts, I sent him to retrieve the copy and explained that I wanted to find a book for him this year that he liked.  He came back with the book, and I'm hoping he gives it a try this weekend.  For some reason, I think he will.

I have a kiddo who needs an intervention of this sort. I'll work on it next week.

And I'll have your goal for your student be my goal for my student. I hope I can do it.

LH- I think we should all make it a goal for at least one student. It's tough, but I think with perseverance we will succeed.

Sankalpa Day 5

Today I went back to the interweb to find out what I could post about that would relate to sankalpa .  "...Sankalpa has the potential to release tremendous power by clearly defining and focusing on a chosen goal."  My chosen goal since May has truly been on being physically active.  Since it's cold and miserable out, I've been being active inside instead of outside.  December 6th (or something like that) was the last time I ventured outside for physical activity.  I, however, have still been going to they gym and focusing on being physically fit (or at least burning enough calories to eat more food).  Yesterday I received an early morning text from a friend in God's Country .  President Obama was talking about "The President's Challenge" .  Today (I tried yesterday and decided to put it off until today... forget out it... let it happen... put it aside... clear my mind of it... all probably sankalpa) I formed a group.  The...

What if... The Delivery

Molly was excited to get a package from her friend who lives in Alaska.  When she opened the box, she was confused.  Although the shirt was actually soft and of good quality, she was upset by the guns in the flag.  When she googled Holster's, it was exactly what she thought... pro-gun.  She didn't know how to handle the situation, so she sent a picture stating she was confused. Her friend had obviously lost her mind.  During the conversation, she kept proclaiming that she hadn't sent a t-shirt.  When Molly explained it was her writing on the box, things became weird.  The friend was in a state of denial.  Molly even sent a text with a picture of the writing on the box. Molly's friend was adamant that she sent homemade condiments.  She wouldn't give up on her story even though it was clear Molly is in possession of an NRA type t-shirt.  After much deliberation, the two friends realized what had happened.  The original box, wit...

Missing You

Two Sundays ago I missed church because I was out of town. Last Sunday I missed church because I could not get to church due to the marathon (blocking my path... not my running). Dad and I tried to leave early, but we did not leave early enough. I joked with Dad about the fact that they would miss me at church. When I checked my e-mail this evening, I actually had an e-mail from my pastor saying I was missed. It was a short e-mail, but it was sweet and definitely a positive part of my day.
