I have never known what maundy means, so I actually looked it up tonight. Maundy is the ceremony of washing feet, so it makes sense. Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) remembers the Last Supper, and Jesus washing the disciples feet. Typically the washing of feet (or hands) and communion is the extent of the Maundy Thursday services I've attended. Tonight our service was different. The theme of Lent this year has been the Holy Way. At tonight's service, we walked the Stations of the Cross. Although I'm sure I have at some point (maybe not... I'm not Catholic) I've walked the Stations, tonights Stations were different. They had a current theme (current issues, struggles, beliefs...). Fifteen stations (There are normally 14. I looked it up on my phone as I sat in the sanctuary while others finished the stations) were designed by various church members. My favorite was made from a poetry book. Others were made from newspaper clippings... awesome art. Of course I really wanted to pull out my phone and take pictures, but it was fairly somber.
Basically, we walked the stations, viewed the wonderful art, and read about current issues and how they relate to the stations. We didn't walk in order or as one big group. It was actually quite thought provoking. Some times people would read aloud, and other times people would read silently. I did both depending on the groups I came upon. Anyway, when we were done, we met in the sanctuary for communion. In my pew, I noticed the offering envelope with the message and imagined some child writing the message during church. It was adorable. Plus, it's a good reminder that we should always thank those for all they give.
Today I give thanks for those who give...
1) The pastor of my church and the artists who designed the Stations (is it capitalized??)
2) The numerous friends and colleagues who have given extra time to me as I've been somewhat one armed (not armed militarily, using one arm).
3) The forgotten people who plow our streets and parking lots during this crazy winter/spring
4) The young child sitting in church and giving his/her (probably her) artwork
