Since I have been visiting schools for the past two days and had Monday off, I will only teach two days this week. I was part of a team that visited AVID schools with similar populations in the Metro area. The visits were informative (good and bad) and merely made me miss my classroom. Although we learned about AVID, I think we more importantly learned about teaching. Good teachers do well no matter what the structure, and bad teachers... Today's visit took us to a school in which one of the teachers was using iPads in his classroom which made me a bit jealous. The classroom was crazy (and not in a good way). Of course it wasn't the iPad usage; it was the teacher sitting behind his desk talking to a friend or colleague. Didn't he know he had visitors in his room? He ignored both students and visiting adults in the room... bad. The other teacher in the same building did a phenomenal job with the students while ignoring the visitors (We had time to talk to her later)... good. When a teacher forgets to put the students' needs first, it looks ugly. The AVID program will be positive for our students because it involves college prep (life) skills of writing, inquiry, reading, and collaboration. Although our school will have to figure out how the program works at our school, I think it will be possible. Also, I'm excited that I am teaching many of the skills involved in the program.
Today I went back to the interweb to find out what I could post about that would relate to sankalpa . "...Sankalpa has the potential to release tremendous power by clearly defining and focusing on a chosen goal." My chosen goal since May has truly been on being physically active. Since it's cold and miserable out, I've been being active inside instead of outside. December 6th (or something like that) was the last time I ventured outside for physical activity. I, however, have still been going to they gym and focusing on being physically fit (or at least burning enough calories to eat more food). Yesterday I received an early morning text from a friend in God's Country . President Obama was talking about "The President's Challenge" . Today (I tried yesterday and decided to put it off until today... forget out it... let it happen... put it aside... clear my mind of it... all probably sankalpa) I formed a group. The...
