This morning I decided to walk to Target instead of walking around the lake. It would be a chance to get an errand done and my walk in one. As I walked out the secured front door to the duplex, I realized I didn't have my credit card. When I reached back to grab the door, I realized I didn't have my credit card, my phone, or the keys to my place.
First I tried to buzz my upstairs neighbor. Typically I would have called him, but I didn't have my phone. He did not answer the buzzer. Next I walked around trying to find some opportunity. I noticed some guys working in a nearby garage and asked if I could use someone's cell phone. Of course this required silly banter with the three men until one finally handed over his phone. My friend, L, has keys to my place, so I called her. She must be out of town or out for the morning because she didn't answer her phone. Walking back to my front door, I was starting to become frustrated. Again I tried to buzz my neighbor without being too obnoxious because I was certain he was home. Realizing it may be a long morning waiting for him to walk his dogs, I leaned against the railing in front of my door.
Then I heard a beautiful noise. At the end of the sidewalk, a man was starting the boom lift. I hastened to him and his boom lift. "Is there anyway you could help me?" I started. "I've locked myself out of my place and the only way in is through the door on the upper deck."
"Are you sure it's unlocked?" he asked.
"Yes, and it's my only way in unless I break a window," I replied.
"I'll give you a ride up to you deck, but you'll have to wear a harness," he explained.
"Oh, thank you. I'll wear a harness not a problem," I answered with some relief.
As the man went to get the harness my neighbor's girlfriend came down the walk with his dogs. After my several attempts at buzzing, they finally figured I was the one buzzing and came to let me in. I explained that I had to wait to tell the man I wouldn't need a ride in the boom lift and thanked her for opening the door. In reality, I would have loved to have the ride in the boom lift although it was not my motivation for locking myself out. Although it was a missed opportunity, it was nice to have an open door and a helpful neighbor.
