Before I left for DC, I spent most of the day making sure things were ready to go for a positive award for some of our students. Since I was going to be gone during the beginning of the week, I e-mailed the list of names and the invitation to my co-chair. He had e-mailed saying he would be willing to help. This from a man who I needed to remind to prepare for the last meeting. I guess I should have known better. When I returned on Thursday, I stopped by the office to see if everything was ready for the pizza party. The secretaries reassured me that all they needed to do was get the names for the invitations. Needless to say, I freaked since I had already e-mailed the names (highlighted in red) to my co-chair. Everything else had already been taken care of before I left (by me). It amazed me that this simple task was not completed.
Of course I took care of things only to be seven minutes late to my "naughtiest" class. When I finally arrived to my class, I was shocked to have everyone in their seats, quiet, and ready to go. This was definitely a first for this class! Since we were in the computer lab today, I rewarded them with seven extra credit points (one for each minute I was late) instead of candy. Having everyone ready to go was a pleasant surprise after the unpleasant incompetency surprise.
Today I was once again frustrated with my colleagues although I'm not quite sure with whom to be frustrated. It seems all we're trying to accomplish by getting staff involved and actively supervising (which really means walking through the halls and talking to students... positively interacting) is causing red flags with the union. Staff has complained about working outside of their contract. Don't teachers always do some work outside of their contract? Aren't teachers supposed to concentrate on what's best for the students instead of whining about a little positive interaction with students. Oh, maybe it's deeper than all of this. I have a meeting next week to find out more... YUCK!
