It all started with a thrown lid. Let me try to make this concise. Thursday my honors class was finishing up literature circles. They do a great job conversing about the books. Since I gave one group of overachieving girls a more challenging read, they were a little "wound up." I was trying to get the group calmed down with no success. The events that followed were comical. These events followed with me taking the lid off of my small plastic Glad container (used to hold my raw nuts I eat at lunch) and throwing it like a frisbee at one of the young ladies. She smiled and said, "This isn't over yet." We all laughed and left when the bell rang.
Friday a small plastic container full of sunflower seeds was left on my desk with a CD wrapped in a paper towel. Honestly I thought it was left by a student who always leaves stuff on my desk. I had asked around, but no one claimed it. Today I decided to look at the CD to get a hint. On the CD was my name something like, "Enjoy Ms. M." Curiosity had me in its grasp. As soon as school was over I placed it in my computer. It was a song that I didn't recognize, so I went across the hall to get help. The song is from The Little Mermaid and has something to do with Ursula. Since I have never watched the little mermaid, I was still a bit perplexed.
Later I went next door to see another teacher. As I walked in the door, I saw the same girl that I threw the lid at, and it started to fit together. "Did you leave the CD and sunflower seeds for me?" I asked.
"Maybe," she said smiling.
"Did you?" I continued.
"I told you it wasn't over!" she explained laughing.
"Are the sunflower seeds safe to eat or poisonous?" I jokingly asked.
"They're safe!" she exclaimed.
When I admitted I had never seen The Little Mermaid, she showed me a picture of Ursula. OK, this may not really seem funny, but it was hilarious and totally made my otherwise sad day tolerable.
A side note, I started eating some of the sunflower seeds on the way home. Even though I do find my raw, unsalted selection of nuts a tasty treat, these salted sunflower seeds were oily and wonderful.
